Plantation shutters are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners. Specifically with those who are looking for an energy efficient option that doesn’t compromise on style.
But, without the right guidance, installing them in your home can be a tricky task, especially if you don’t take the right steps to prepare yourself.
Discover how to install plantation shutters yourself in four easy steps with Solaire Blinds and our vast blinds-related expertise, below.
4 easy steps to installing plantation shutters
The overall process of how plantation shutters are installed can be summarised in four easy steps, whether you’re installing them in your home, or at your commercial property.
Step 1
Firstly, you must install the frame. Shutter frames are usually constructed of four pieces; two sides and two ends. Remember to remove the cover strip before assembly if your frame choice has one.
Depending on the amount of access you have to the window, your frame could be assembled beforehand and installed in one piece, or assembled within the recess itself. If you build the frame beforehand, make sure to tap the sides into each connector piece until they are flush against each other. Once the frame is in the correct position – and is square and level – it needs to be screwed into place.
Step 2
Once the frame is installed you can then attach the panels. If you have an inside mount, this means installing the frame inside the recess of the window. An outside mount means mounting it directly onto whatever it is positioned in front of.
Attaching the panels is relatively straightforward. This is a simple case of dropping the hinge pins into place. Ensure there are no gaps and then open and close the panels, checking for clearance and correct alignment.
Step 3
Step three involves attaching the button catch to the top of the frame – at the halfway point from the inner edge of the stile.
Place the strike plate onto the catch and close the panel to determine the correct location for it. If you’re interested in how we fit your blinds – and how we ensure they’re made to measure – take a look at our blog.
Step 4
Before completing the job, test and check the operation. The panels and louvres should move freely and easily, without any obstruction or friction.
Finally, make any adjustments or amendments if required. For example, you may need to reposition the button catch or adjust how the frame sits within the recess of the window.
What to avoid when installing plantation shutters
When installing plantation shutters, there are several things you should avoid doing, including:
Incorrect measurements
Taking the incorrect measurements can affect the way your shutters look as they might not fit your window properly.
Even the smallest height or width error can mean your shutters don’t sit well. As well as affecting their function, it affects the overall style of your shutters too. If you’re interested in how to measure for blinds, check out our guide.
Irregular maintenance
Not taking the steps to regularly clean your shutters and maintain their appearance can adversely affect the longevity of them.
Ensure you adopt a frequent cleaning routine and avoid the use of harsh chemicals. Use a microfibre cloth as it can tackle an abundance of bacteria and viruses. If you’re interested in the best way to clean plantation shutters, our guide explains it all.
Picking the wrong style
Another mistake many make when installing plantation shutters is that they choose the wrong style. Without dedicated thought and preparation, you could end up picking shutters that don’t fit in with your current aesthetic.

What are the benefits of plantation shutters?
Plantation shutters have many benefits, for example, they give you the ability to completely control light flow within your home. Other benefits include:
- Durability: When maintained properly, plantation shutters can last for a long time in any home – thanks to the quality materials they’re made out of.
- Child safety: Plantation shutters are also child friendly – instead of having long strings attached that control them (which can be a choking hazard), you simply need to move the levers attached to the shutters themselves.
- Easy maintenance: Plantation shutters are also easy to maintain. Since they are sturdy, they’re able to withstand friction – so can be cleaned with a hoover attachment when dusty.
