How to Take Down Venetian Blinds – In Two Different Ways

Refreshing your home interior doesn’t mean you have to redecorate everything. In fact, simple steps such as replacing old blinds can breathe new life into your property. But, you need to make sure you remove them correctly, to avoid damage to the blinds and the windows.

If you’re wondering how to take down Venetian blinds properly, our blog explains it all. Find out what tools you need, and the different methods to perform depending on the Venetian blinds you have…

How to take down metal Venetian blinds with standard brackets

Venetian blinds with standard brackets are fixed in place, so require a bit more work to help take them down. Follow the below four steps to help you do so:

1. Safety first

Step one in any DIY project should be safety first. That means putting a protective sheet on your floor to avoid damage from debris or blind slats accidentally dropping on the floor. Take your time when using the tools to ensure you don’t accidentally cause injuries to yourself or others.

2. Raise the blinds all the way up and lift the bracket

Next, ensure the slats are in the fully open position and then raise the blind all the way up and lock them in place. To remove the blind use a flat-head screwdriver in between the metal clip and the blind and pull it towards you, this releases the blind. Once lifted, remove the screwdriver and repeat on the other brackets on the opposite side – ensuring both clips are released.

3. Remove the blinds

Now the clips have been released, remove the blinds out of the open brackets. Grab a hold of the Venetian blinds on both sides and gently push away from you. With the brackets now lifted up – thanks to the lip removal – they should be easy to slide out. Once you’ve removed it, set it aside carefully – ensuring you don’t leave it lying around as a trip hazard, and that you don’t damage it.

4. Unscrew the bracket

Finally, use a drill or screwdriver to unscrew the bracket from the wall. Once you’ve done so, place them somewhere you won’t lose them, such as in a separate bag or on a nearby shelf. Repeat the step on the other side to remove that bracket too. If you don’t plan on replacing the blinds, fill the screw holes with and repaint.

How to remove Venetian blinds with spring-loaded brackets

Unlike standard brackets, spring-loaded brackets are adjustable – meaning you can position the Venetian blinds how you like, as well as being able to remove them more easily.

1. Again, safety first

Exactly the same as the previous method, ensure you put safety first when taking down Venetian blinds with spring-loaded brackets. Take your time and ensure you put an old bed sheet down before taking any action.

2. Release the bracket

Using the drawstring, pull the blinds all the way up making sure the slats are in the fully open position. This way, the blind blades lift upward and lock into place. Locate the spring-loaded brackets (typically at the top of the window, holding up the blinds). With both hands, push the blind in towards the window, whilst rotating it toward you. You’ll know it’s released as you’ll hear a clicking sound. Then, repeat the step on the other side.

Solaire’s Top Tip – Don’t take the blind off the first bracket until the second bracket is released. This way, you don’t have to hold the blind up with one hand when releasing the second bracket!

3. Remove the bracket with a drill

Once both brackets have been released, you can pull the blinds off the window. Then, remove the brackets with a drill – ensuring you take your time and put the screws and brackets in a safe spot. If you’re interested in finding out how to measure for new blinds, we detail it all in our blog.

What tools do you need when taking down Venetian blinds?

When taking down Venetian blinds, it’s important to ensure you first have the right set of tools. Using the wrong ones can potentially cause damage to your blinds. For example, they might not be able to operate when installing them in a different room.

Ensure you use the following tools when taking down Venetian blinds:

  • Screwdriver – to remove the brackets
  • Pliers – to remove screws from the wall or brackets
  • Level – to ensure precision when reinstalling the blinds
  • Pencil – to mark the screw holes on the window frame

What should you avoid doing when taking down Venetian blinds?

Whilst taking down Venetian blinds is easier than you might originally think, you do need to ensure you avoid the following:

  • Damaging the old set of blinds: Ensure you don’t cause damage to the set of blinds you’re replacing. If you’re throwing them away then there’s no need to worry as much, but if you plan on putting them in another room, be careful not to force the blinds or bend them, as this can affect their functionality and appearance.
  • Forget to mark where the screws were: If you plan on replacing the blinds, don’t forget to mark where the screws are to ensure you can install a new set in the exact same place as before.
  • Ignore safety measures: Failing to maintain safety measures is a big no-no in any DIY project. It doesn’t matter how small the job is – putting safety first is a must to avoid injuries occurring.
