How Do Roman Blinds Work?

A window treatment that never goes out of style, Roman blinds can refine the look and finish off any room in your home. These blinds excel at providing luxury without compromising on function, making them a popular choice with many homeowners.

If you’re looking at introducing Roman blinds to your home, you might also be asking yourself ‘how do Roman blinds work?’. Luckily for you, we have the answer to that question below in our blog. Read on to discover how Roman blinds function, as well as why they are so popular with homeowners.

So, how do Roman blinds work?

A firm favourite in both residential and commercial settings, Roman blinds work via both manual or motorised functions. With a manual operation, small rings are sewn onto the back of the blind’s fabric, and the thin cording is threaded through.

As the user pulls the operating chain, the blind’s fabric gently lifts – revealing a sophisticated, pleated style. When closed, the blinds unfold and lay flat in a smooth finish. This cord is also hidden out of sight – so whilst it creates a neater look, it can also be a safer option for those with little children.

A motorised Roman blind works in a similar way, but is controlled by a remote control or wall switch instead.

What are the benefits of Roman blinds?

Homeowners can appreciate several benefits when purchasing Roman blinds for their home, including:

Insulation and light control

Roman blinds can help keep the heat in your home, thanks to their layered fabric style and heat retaining properties. You can even add a thermal lining to your Roman blinds when you work with Solaire, which can help you benefit from a cosier, warmer atmosphere in the winter.

Meanwhile, in the summer, closing the blinds will allow you to block direct sunlight – leaving behind a softer hue that provides more idyllic ambient lighting. What’s more, you can even choose a blackout option for environments where darkness is required, such as to prevent sunlight seeping through in your bedroom when you’re sleeping during the day.

Makes a statement

Thanks to their unique design that evokes sophistication and luxury, Roman blinds can also make a statement in your home.

Add them to a dull area to freshen it up, or even use it as a focal point in any room. Because of their unique, layered design, Roman blinds flow seamlessly in any room – providing a level of comfort and cosiness in comparison to more straight, square-shaped blinds.

Versatility

Due to the range of fabrics and furnishings available, Roman blinds are also incredibly versatile, meaning there are many ways you can style them. For example, House Digest suggests pairing Roman with curtains to further help facilitate privacy and style.

At Solaire Blinds, our Roman blinds come in an extensive collection of fabrics, patterns, and colours. No matter the aesthetic of your home, or the style you’re looking to display, we have a Roman blind that can meet your unique needs.

How to measure for Roman blinds

Now we’ve answered the question: ‘how do Roman blinds work?’, you might have decided these blinds are the right choice for your home. If so, you’ll need to know how to measure for blinds. But, there are two different ways you can measure for Roman Blinds, and it depends on what you need.

Let’s take a look at them both in more detail below.

Inside the recess measurement

To measure for Roman blinds inside the recess of your window, you need to take three different measurements.

  1. Measure at the top, middle, and bottom of your inside window recess.
  2. Repeat this step but down the window recess instead.
  3. Record your measurements.

Top tip from Jenny, a Solaire Blinds expert: Make sure you use the smallest measurement to ensure a snug fit and avoid any issues with uneven walls.

Outside the recess measurement

Measuring outside the window recess of your blind is similar to the above, but you need to consider how you would like your Roman Blind to sit.

  1. Firstly, measure the width. Assess how far either side of the recess you want the blind to sit. At Solaire Blinds, we recommend 10cm to each side.
  2. Measuring the length is similar to the width, again, evaluate how far above the window you want the blind to sit. At Solaire Blinds, we recommend 10cm unless you have a window that opens inwards..
  3. Finally, when measuring the length consider how far below the window you want the blind to sit. At Solaire Blinds, we recommend 10cm.

Top tip from Jenny, a Solaire Blinds expert: Make sure the measurement taken will allow the blind to have equal overlap on both sides to provide a balanced look and help with better light coverage and privacy control.

How to clean Roman blinds

With any blinds you purchase, treating them with care and cleaning them frequently will maintain their appearance whilst increasing the longevity of them.

That’s why, when cleaning Roman blinds, you must handle them with care to avoid damaging them. If you want to dust them, use a hoover attachment and gently move down the blinds to remove debris.

For any stains, use a damp, cold cloth (warm or hot water can actually make stains set in) with soapy water or gentle detergent. Remember to wring the cloth after each wipe to avoid watermarks occurring.

However, if you have a silk or linen fabric, you might want to skip this step and opt for a professional’s help. Check out our blog on how to clean blinds for more information. Most of our roman and curtain fabrics are dry clean only.
